Murder, Mystery and Me

March 10th, 2010

My favorite author is Dame Agatha Christie. I have read all of her books and most of them more than once because I am fascinated by the process she uses to solve her crimes. The amazing part of all of it, to me, is that the clues are there for you to read and solve if you will only be observant enough to read them clearly. Often just the merest turn of a phrase is the answer to the whole puzzle. And that’s how I have always viewed her books- as a wonderfully delightful puzzle to solve while enjoying the journey to the end. There have been times when I have solved the crime and come up with the right reasons and identified the proper clues. It’s not enough to just guess at the perpetrator, I feel you have to use Dame Agatha’s reasoning as well. I am most fond of Miss Marple although I do enjoy the prissy Hercule Poirot as well. I wish she had written more of her fascinating couple, Tommy and Tuppence. I cannot think of one single book that is my all-time favorite but I did love the idea that she had written endings for both her main characters long before she died so that they could be finished off after her death.

Loner and Loving It

March 4th, 2010

I love to do things alone in my spare times. Spending time with my friends is great but being by myself and writing is what I live for. I spend hours by myself with nothing but a notebook and some pens. When I can’t stand writing any longer I often go to my kitchen by myself and cook food that only I enjoy. All my hobbies include being by myself and doing things that benefit only me for once. That means cooking pizza with the toppings my family despises, writing stories about death and destruction, understanding and wonder, anything. Often I also design my own t-shirts, leaving paint on creases of my house I wouldn’t imagine possible. I make a mess over everything and enjoy it. Hobbies are great to have when you can do them around other people, but being by myself and doing things only I enjoy makes hobbies better than anything I could imagine.

I’m wearing a snazzy outfit!

Women's sandals.

Today I’m in black and white. It is hot outside so I’m dressed casually, but I also have appointments so I needed something more than jeans. I’m wearing a white cotton top. It has flowers outlined in black on a white background. The shirt has cap sleeves. There are several buttons on the front. The first 4 are little black round buttons. The other 5 buttons are white but hidden in a placket. The shirt has an empire waist and is sort of flowing on the bottom. I’m also wearing black stretch Capri’s. The pants come to just below my knees and have a 3 inch slit on the side for comfort. My outfit is completed with some black and white shoes. They are sandals with a ¾” heel. The top of the sandal has two pieces of leather, one black and one white that are crossed over each other. The leather is sort of scrunched giving it some interesting detail. My outfit is completed by beautifully painted red toenails.

Balancing a Dinner with Chicken, a Starch and a Vegetable

Brussels Sprouts

Our family shared a dinner last night that consisted of barbecued chicken, noodles and Brussels sprouts. This combination was chosen because it was balanced with meat, a vegetable and a carbohydrate. It was the perfect amount of food. We had one fairly small package of chicken that just fed the four of us. It was a remaining package that I didn’t use two nights before when I cooked chicken on the stove. This time, my husband barbecued the chicken, basting it with barbecue sauce. The chicken turned out to be cooked the perfect length of time; it was not dry or overcooked. Our egg noodles were boiled in water until tender, and then drained. Butter and salt were added to taste, and served with the chicken. Approximately one half of the bag was cooked, which was plenty for the family of two adults and two children under five. The Brussels sprouts were stored frozen. They were boiled until tender, and drained. No seasoning or butter was put on them. Again, approximately one half of a bag was cooked, and this was plenty. We actually had some left over. When the family finished dinner, the adults enjoyed dessert while the children watched a DVD elsewhere. One adult ate a frozen ice cream dessert consisting of vanilla ice cream between two chocolate cookies. The other adult enjoyed homemade cheesecake.

About Louisville Colorado

February 19th, 2010

Louisville Colorado is a small city about 15 minutes prior to the east of Boulder Colorado. Louisville, long regarded as a bedroom community, has grown especially in recent years and, since the 1990s, has seen the establishment of many large businesses.

Louisville is located only about 5 minutes West of Lafayette CO, and 10 or 15 minutes South of Longmont Colorado. In close proximity is Erie Colorado , another five minutes away from Lafayette. If you work in Boulder, but want a combination of an inexpensive house and a small-town , Louisville is certainly worth considering.

What Happened to Good Old Westerns?

February 18th, 2010

I love good westerns. “True Grit” is probably my favorite but I genuinely like most of the westerns that contain some authenticity. The storyline doesn’t have to be complicated, the hero can have flaws, the scenery is usually beautiful, and the ending is usually storybook. I think “Lonesome Dove” and “Broken Trail” are to be thought of classics one day because they’re wonderful. I’ve seen them both about 25+ times. “Dances with Wolves” is another outstanding choice. One thing I can’t tolerate is the leading lady with a Hollywood hairdo and makeup! I realize that decades ago, actresses didn’t want to be seen looking less than perfect but that little quirk just doesn’t translate well to a western. Their clothing also reflects that thinking and just never rings true. My husband is a history nut and he often comments on what seems to be fairly authentic and what is a Hollywood fabrication. He has a lot of books with pictures reflecting those times and they’re a lot of fun to look at. Give me a western with Indians, covered wagons, a likable hero, a believable heroine, some nice scenery, a bad guy or two, an acceptably honest conclusion… and I’m happy.

The Trouble with Power Lines

February 15th, 2010

If there are large high-voltage lines near your home, quite apart from perceptions about health, your ability to sell the residence can be affected. There are some people that swear they get electrical charges from the power that leaks from the lines and causes an electro magnetic field. Besides the way they look, large energy lines have been linked to increased health problems including cancer.

Quite apart from the way they look, large high-voltage lines are being increasingly linked to problems about health including cancer. Buyers coming to see a house may just turn back if they spot large powerlines in the neighborhood. You should only consider buying one of these houses if you want to keep it for the rest of your life or if you are prepared to take a loss on resale.

If the only residence within your resources is one that has been drastically reduced in price because of proximity of large powerlines, you may want to wait until you can find a better house you can afford. Some people have been known to claim that in high winds, the lines can sway with a creaking or a whistling noise. You also consider how close they are to the house because they have been known to break especially when there are ice storms.

Even if you take the negative health images out of the mix, you still need to consider the difficulty in selling the home. You are handicapping yourself in the uphill battle to recover money from your asset. Unfortunately there are houses already on the market that will sit there for a long time because of the proximity of powerlines.

There are some places in which many of the homes are affected. People that live in close knit towns like this might not have as hard a time selling their house to others in the town. For those that live in the suburbs or metropolitan areas, this can be another story. Any broker you ask would probably give you the same information. Nearby high-voltage lines are the ultimate turn off to some purchasers. Other problems that can severely hamper the salability of a residence are retention ponds and the noise from nearby railroad tracks. The worst of these problems is difficult to pick.

Before you finalize contracts to buy a residence, you should convince yourself that the house can resell quickly. You must always keep job relocation or a change of home due to family considerations in mind. Try and find a home at a price that is within your budget which also provides opportunities for capital appreciation. You are unlikely to see any appreciation in a residence that is located near large powerlines, so be careful even if you are getting such a great offer that you cannot refuse it.

The seller must have considered the same negatives but finally decided that the price was too attractive to resist. Should you decide that the home is worth the price, just remember that he would have to look for a similar kind of customer at the time of resale.

I Never Regretted the Choice

Trumpet
Image by Sara Björk via Flickr

At age nine, I chose the trumpet as my primary musical instrument. It has remained a great choice for me throughout my entire life. The trumpet is a versatile instrument, has a beautiful sound, plays melody or harmony, is used frequently in jazz, classical and show music, and provides plenty of opportunities to play in solo, small or large ensemble. The versatility of the trumpet can be seen in the way it is played, as well as in its types of venues. The sound can be altered greatly by the use of various mutes. The three most common are the straight mute, the cup mute and the Harmon mute, which can further be changed by moving or removing the stem of the mute. One can use a hand over the bell or the Harmon mute to produce a wa-wa sound. The horn can be played in the upper register for a powerful sound that can’t be produced anywhere else. It can be played in all registers in many different styles.
