As a retired person, I have many options concerning my daily routine. The best part is that I wake up when I am rested. I may still pop out of bed at 6:00 a.m., but I am ready to face the day instead of dragging myself out of bed in order to make it to work on time. The exception to this is when I have agreed to meet a working friend at the gym early in the morning so that she can get to work on time. On those days, I have to drag myself to the gym at 5:15 a.m., but I can always return home and take a little nap. Almost every day on the calendar is filled with some activity. I like to get together with friends so lunches out, informal gatherings at my home and dates with friends to kayak, hike and attend meeting relating to my hobbies fill my calendar. On days when I just want to have some private time, I can easily fill hours with organizing my closets, keeping up correspondence, gardening, or completing some project started many years ago. Volunteer work gives me the sense that my life is still valuable as does babysitting for the grandchildren, and of course there is the ever present challenge of keeping my husband fed. My days are fuller than they ever were when I was employed, but that’s what every retired person says.
